ATHENS, Ga. – Jacksonville State (26-15) scored 13 unanswered runs over the final three innings to erase an 8-3 deficit en route to a 16-8 win over No. 6 Georgia (33-12) at Foley Field on Wednesday.
The Gamecocks trailed 8-3 going into the seventh inning before scoring one in the seventh, three in the eighth and nine in the ninth to earn their second win over the Bulldogs this season.
Andrew Edge started the comeback in the seventh, blasting a solo home run to centerfield to trim the Bulldogs’ lead to 8-4.
Spencer Brandes led off the eighth with a single and scored on a Blake Seguin sac-fly. Todd Cunningham, who extended his hitting streak to 17 games, singled and later scored on a Daniel Adamson double to make it an 8-7 contest.
The Gamecocks sent 15 batters to the plate in the nine-run ninth with Cunningham’s two-run triple giving JSU a 9-8 lead. Seguin followed with an RBI single to right and two runs scored when Adamson drew a bases loaded walk and Sam Eberle was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Edge, who had three RBI, and Jay Davis drove in two runs each with singles.
Closer Bill Henke (2-1) worked two innings with a strikeout while allowing no runs or hits to earn the win for JSU. UG stopper Dean Weaver (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on four hits with a strikeout.
The Bulldogs struck first scoring four runs in the first. Rich Poythress had a two-run single and Joey Lewis had an RBI single to give UGA a 4-0 lead.
Jacksonville State cut the deficit to a run in the top of the third. Steven Leach, who went 5-for-6 with an RBI, led off the inning with a single and scored on a Kyle Bluestein double to centerfield. Bluestein, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games, later scored on Daniel Adamson’s ninth home run of the season.
Georgia stretched its lead out to 8-3 with a three-run in the fourth and a run in the fifth. Adam Fuller drew a bases loaded walk force in a run and Peter Verdin singled in two runs in the fourth. Matt Cerione singled and scored on a Colby May single in the fifth.
Jacksonville State hosts Morehead State for an Ohio Valley Conference series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
